Joint Editors— J. V. ELSDEN, D.Sc. (Lond.), F.G.S. . i HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. LONDON, FRIDAY, MAY 14, 1915. The London coal trade for the past week lias not been so brisk as formerly. House coals are moving very slowly. More enquiries, however, are in evidence for summer stocking coal, but collieries do not care for forward business. Pit prices are firm, but buying is limited. No settlement yet as to lowest summer, prices. The seaborne market is heavily affected by the new regulations as to obtaining special licences for supplying neutral countries. .. < The prohibition of exports to neutral countries except tinder licence has had a disturbing effect upon those markets which depend upon the outward cbal trade. Assurances of expedition in the matter of granting licences have since caused markets to resume a more normal tone, but there still remains a considerable amount of uncertainty, which naturally restricts forward business. On the Tyne and Wear, the better knowledge of Government intentions has brought about a more cheerful tone; nevertheless, there is a slight falling-off in prices. The inland coal trade has changed but little. . Throughout Lancashire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire, except for a slight decrease in household requests, the demand still continues heavy, and the markets generally maintain a firm tone. The export Order at first caused a paralysing effect on the Cardiff market; from which, however, recovery is now being made. The Scottish coal trade is somewhat quieter. More than ordinary interest is attached to the Board of Trade returns for April in view bf the Order prohibiting the export of coal to neutral countries except under licence. Exports of coal, coke and manufactured fuel during last month were 3,985j846 tons, and the value £3,426,883, as eoin- pared with 5,445,728 toils, valued at £3,744,643^ in April 1914 ; and 6,605,214 tons, valued at £4,670,153/ in April 1913. During the first four months of the year the exports totalled 15,684,094 tons, valued at £11,873,625, as compared with 23,680;027 tons, valued at £16,482,705, and 24,633,615 tons, valued at £17,026,192, in the corresponding period of 1914 and 1913 respectively. The average value of coal,, coke and manu- factured fuel exported from the United Kingdom during April was 17s. 2‘3d. per ton, as com- pared with 13s. 9i03d. in April 1914, and 14s. l*6d. in April 1913. The value during the first four completed months, of the present year is 15s l’6d. per ton as com- pared with 13s. ll-05d. and 13s. 9’8d. respectively in the corresponding periods of 1914 and 1913. Of the total exports of coal during April, the mean value of the large coal exported was 19s.,7*0 Id.; through-and-through (unscreened), . 14s. 3 2d.; and small coal, 14s. 10 Yd. The average value of . all kinds of coal exported was 17s.- l*3d., an . increase of Is. 10‘2d. as compared with the previous month. Other- wise divided, it fetched the following:—Steam coal, 17s. 11’2d. ; gas coal, 13s. 3\4d.; anthracite,* 17s. 4-3d. ; household, 18s. 9*6d. ; other sorts,
