Freight rates have again advanced, chiefly on the north-east coast, and there appears to be a possibility of scarcity of tonnage at the end of the month. Under the circumstances, it is not surprising that commitments ahead have not been of large dimen- sions. Loading turns on the Tyne and Wear con- tinue to be congested, and little coal has been on offer; the prompt markets maintain a firm tone. The Lancashire hoti.se coal trade shows signs of becoming quieter. The Derbyshire and Yorkshire markets continue to experience a heavy demand and a limited supply. The market at Cardiff is in a very disturbed state, the Admiralty taking almost the whole of the output of best coals. In the West of Scotland the demand for household fuel has slightly slackened, but industrials maintain their position; the enquiry in the east is still very heavy. The London coal trade for the past week has been restricted to very limited dimensions in the house coal market. The colder weather slightly stimulated trade at the commencement of the week. The public prices were discussed, but no change took place. Pit prices are very uncertain. Mr. Adam Nimmo has been appointed a member of the Coal Production Committee, in place of the Earl of Crawford resigned. On Monday next, Mr. J. Drummond Paton will read a paper entitled, ‘‘Modern Developments in Hydraulic Stowing,” to the members of the South Staffordshire and Warwickshire Institute of Mining Engineers. The influence of the war on the coal trade formed the theme of a presidential address by Mr. D. M. Mowat, on Saturday last, at the annual meeting of the Mining Institute of Scotland. A subsidence has occurred in the Ube coal mine, near Shimonoseki (Japan), and it is reported that 300 men are missing. All Customs and transport taxes on coal imported into Spain have been removed. A paper dealing with overwinding was read by Mr. G. G. T. Poole, on Saturday, before the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers. A second paper, entitled “ Coal Mining in Mexico,” was contributed by Mr. E. O. Forster Brown. The Northumberland coal owners have agreed to relax the rule that miners, before claiming the minimum, must work full time. In view of the Detail Coal Prices Committee’s recommendation regarding the restriction of coal exports, the Board of Trade returns for March and the quarter ended therewith will be of special interest. Exports of coal, coke and manufactured
