Me CoUUnt (tanlian AND Journal of the Coal and Iron Trades. Joint Editors—. J. V. ELSDEN, D.Sc. (Lond.), F.G.S. HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. LONDON, FRIDAY, Al ARCH19, 19 IS. The London house coal trade is quiet, and pit prices are slightly easier. The cheaper qualities were reduced from Is. to 2s. per ton in the public prices during the week. The depots report a very slow trade. The railway companies are bringing forward larger tonnages to the wharves and depots, but the slow return of the empties is causing heavy losses at the colliery end. Prompt markets on both the Tyne and Wear are very firm; coal for shipment is scarce, and there have been few transactions; prices show a marked advance. Freight rates have begun to fall, and boats are more freely offered. The inland coal trade shows little change except that the milder weather has relieved the pressure in house coals, though other classes of fuel remain in strong request. This' state of affairs is noticeable throughout Lanca- shire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire. At Cardiff, best Admiralty and a good many of the secondary qualities are practically off the market, and there has been very little current business; prices are irregular. An easier tone is to be found in Scottish markets. It is rumoured that the Government intend to prohibit the shipment of coal to the Mediterranean. An interesting paper on the subject of coal dust explosions was read by Mr. J. D. Morgan on Monday before the North Staffs. Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers. Mr. J. P. Houfton at Nottingham on Monday recommended the suspension of coal exports to neutral countries. It has been decided to appoint a committee of seven Labour officials to act as an advisory committee to the Government in the matter of the latter’s decision to take over control of munition factories. The report of the Committee on the retail price of coal is expected within the next few days, evidence having now been completed. Lord Kitchener has appealed to the miners to ' limit their Easter holidays to one or two days, and the executive of the Miners’ Federation have recom- mended such policy to the various districts. The Miners’ Federation of Great Britain has decided to press for an increase of 20 per cent, in wages to counterbalance the higher cost of living. The South Wales Miners’ Federation have refused to accept the owners’ offer of a 10 per cent, advance in wages, on condition that the present agreement remains unaltered during the period of the war. The men’s section of the coal Conciliation Board have decided to accept the terms of the proposed new agreement for mine workers in the Federated area. The proposals have now to be considered by the masters’ section of the Board. In the Court of Appeal last week judgment was reserved in the case of Date v. the Gas Coal Collieries Limited, which involved the question as to whether a checkweigher can also act as a workmen’s inspector.
