BROOKE & SONS LTD., Netherton Colliery, Wakefield. The London coal trade for the past week has been very quiet, notwithstanding the colder weather. Comparatively little new coal has been bought on the open market, but merchants are pressing forward j the full contract quantities. Railway companies are bringing forward better supplies, and empties are returning with greater regularity. The tension in the coal trade appears to have become a shade easier. The demand still exceeds the supply in many cases, but on the whole the enquiry has not been quite as brisk. Furthermore, for the first time since the war, tonnage on the north-east coast has actually exceeded the demand, with the natural falling-off in rates resulting. For this reason the prompt markets on the Tyne and Wear are experiencing considerable pressure, and prices still tend to increase. Supplies in Lancashire are just a little better, and the demand, in conse- quence of the milder weather, has slightly weakened- The Derbyshire market remains unchanged, there being a strong enquiry and an inadequate supply, so that prices maintain a firm tone. In Yorkshire the offerings of “free” coal have been very meagre, and even fancy prices have not tempted prompt deliveries. The position of the Cardiff market is abnormal, and business has been confined to narrow limits, with prices irregular. In Scotland, despite high values, there continues to be an exceedingly . brisk enquiry. J Exports of coke and manufactured fuel from the United Kingdom in February totalled 3,784,894 . tons, the value being £2,686,845, as compared with > 5,974,608 tons, valued at £4,193,808, in February 1914, and 5,822,925 tons, valued at £3,982,112, in .
