HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E.' LONDON, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1915. The London coal trade is somewhat easier for house coals, but distinctly firmer for hard steam coal. Kailways are bringing forward better supplies. Public prices advanced a further 2s. per ton during the week. All colliery quotations continue with- drawn, and are sold only at special prices, which remain firm. Very little change has taken place in the coal trade during the past week, unless it is that the difficulties have become more pronounced. With recruiting steadily progressing and the output as steadily diminishing, with freights higher and a return of cold weather, it is not surprising that prices exhibit an upward tendency. The improve- ment in the Tyne prompt coal market continues, and despite high prices and high freights the volume of business is only regulated by the tonnage on offer. On the Wear the need of tonnage is acutely felt, and the market is somewhat quieter. The position throughout Lancashire and Derbyshire remains unaltered, there being a strong all-round demand and an inefficient supply. A similar state of affairs prevails in Yorkshire, where the amount of free coal on offer is very small. The Scottish markets continue to show strength. Sir Herbert Maxwell, at the annual meeting of Messrs.. Merry and Cuninghame, on Wednesday, stated that the company had purchased the Ardeer ironworks and the Ardeer andAuchenharvie collieries. Denmark, it would appear, is likely to again experience a shortage of coal supplies, and the Government has instituted an enquiry as to the present stocks. The Home Secretary has appointed a committee, under the presidency of Sir Bichard Bedmayne H.M. Chief Inspector of Mines, to enquire into the conditions prevailing in the coal mining industry with a view to setting free for, enlistment the largest possible number of men without interfering with production. It is understood that at an early date the trial will take place of the four members of a well known Glasgow firm of iron merchants who were recently charged with having traded with the enemy. Owing to the improvement recently manifested in the Northumbrian coal trade, it has been found possible to reopen some of the pits which had been closed on account of the effects of the war. In the House of Commons on Monday an important discussion took place on the Government aniline dye scheme, and Air. Bunciman stated that already £400,000 out of the million required had been subscribed. The Miners’ Federation of Great Britain recently
