1042 THE COLLIERY GUARDIAN. NOVBMBEK^IS, 1914. the cylinder E, thus holding the piston 12 in elevated posi- tion, making an automatic safety arrangement, so that the operator or driver can start the pump 13 and then go back to the rear of the truck and open the body C to allow the contents to empty while the body is elevating without any alteration to the elevating parts. If it is desired to stop the pump 13 and hold the piston 12 and body C in elevated position, the operator turns the valve 24 into the position illustrated in fig. 2, stopping the flow of liquid which holds the piston in the desired position. When it is desired to lower the piston 12 and body 0, the valve 24 is turned into the position illustrated in fig. 5, and the gear pump may or may not be used, as the weight of the body is sufficient to force the liquid to the other side of the piston, the liquid forming a cushion for the descending body which prevents any impact between the body and frame. In elevating the piston 12, if air gets into the gear pump 13, it will not produce a strong enough flow of liquid to start the piston up; the operator then opens the valve 28 by the levers 29, which open the by-pass 27, and allows the liquid to short circuit through the cylinder around the piston. The air will then rise to the top of the cylinder, where it will be separated from the oil. The valve 28 is then closed and the piston 12 elevated. (Five claims.) 28118 (1913). Improvements in Automatic Apparatus for Filling Skips or other Receptacles. R. Dempster & Sons Ltd., Rose Mount Ironworks, Eiland, Yorkshire, and W. Mitton. Relates to automatic apparatus for delivering a pre-deter- mined weight of coal, coke, or other material, to a skip or other receptacle, of the type in which the weight of the receptacle, when placed upon a platform which is counter- balanced by an equivalent weight, causes a sufficient move- ment of the platform to effect thereby the opening of the door of a hopper, bunker, or other storage device. The plat- form is then brought to rest by means of a second counter- weight equivalent to the weight of the material required in the skip, and when such equivalent weight has been added to the skip or platform a further movement of the platform is thus caused, which brings about the closing of the said door. According to the invention the platform is suspended from one arm of a pivoted lever, the other arm of which actuates a sliding bar, which bar has preferably a vertical movement in guides. The foot of this bar is con- nected by a normally slack rope or the like to a heavy counterweight, and the upper part of the bar carries a catch adapted to engage a projection on the lever of a quadrant door controlling the outflow of the coke or other material. The weight of the skip when placed on the platform causes a certain descent of the platform and rocking of the lever, which latter lifts the bar so that its catch causes the quad- rant door to be drawn back from the hopper outlet, when the filling of the skip from such outlet begins; when this filling reaches a certain point the further descent of the plat- form causes the catch on the bar to be lifted clear of the projection on the door, which door therefore closes auto- matically. On the removal of the skip, the counterweight brings down the bar, the catch on which, being capable of giving way in one direction only, passes the projection on the door, when the apparatus is ready for the next skip to be placed on the platform and filled. The accompanying drawing represents the apparatus in sectional elevation. (One claim.)
