Joint Editors— J. V. ELSDEN, D.Sc. (Lond.), F.G.S. HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S., Assoc.M.I.M.E. LONDON, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1914. The London coal market is still moving very slowly. House coals are accumulating, and manu- facturing qualities are not selling so freely. Slacks and small nuts have been over-plentiful, and prices are considerably weaker. The present position of the coal trade is far from satisfactory. The indecisive period of the war is being prolonged beyond expectations, with the result that buyers hesitate to speculate. Shipowners are reluctant to send vessels to the mine-strewn area of the North Sea, and this has created a dearth of tonnage, and in addition to this freight rates have kept on a high level. At Newcastle the market is dull, and only hand to mouth transactions are being effected. In Lancashire, business is only moderate. The Yorkshire markets are on the quiet side, and in the west a dislocation of traffic adds to the difficulties. The Cardiff position is best described as marking time. The Admiralty continue to take the whole of best Admiralty coals. Trade in Scotland is fair. The Mining Institute of Scotland met at Edinburgh on Saturday last, when an interesting discussion took place on the Rosehall signal indicator. The question of hydraulic stowage was discussed by the members of the Manchester Geological and Mining Society at their meeting at Manchester on Tuesday. Before the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers at Newcastle, on Saturday, Mr. G. J. Ralph contributed a paper dealing with a new electrical gas-detecting device, Mr. S. Dean read a paper on coalmining ir Illinois, and Mr. B. C. Gullachsen one dealing with hydraulic stowing on the Witwatersrand. An Amsterdam telegram states that it is reported from Essen that negotiations concerning the renewal of the coal combination have come to a complete The period within which unaffiliated
