Prices continue very loxv} and the actual consumption is very weak, but the volume of trade on the market has considerably increased. Both the prompt markets on the Tyne and Wear have become unsettled by the marine engineers’ strike, and in both cases little business has been contracted, owing to a policy of caution which is being adopted by all parties in view of the threatened stoppage of Scottish miners. The Lancashire coal trade still maintains its summer level, though prices are steady. Business in Yorkshire and Derbyshire may be termed fair. There is little change to be noticed in the Cardiff market; on the other hand, in Scotland, owing to the threatened stoppage of pits trade has been very active during the past week. The House of Lords has delivered judgment in an appeal under the Workmen’s Compensation Act, in which a miner’s enforced idleness due to accident
