The outward freight market has not recorded a great deal of business this week. On the north-east coast there has been little selling of coal for early loading, and, conse- quently, the demand for tonnage has been slight. Coasting rates are based on 2s. 10|d. to London and 3s. 3d. to Hamburg, from the Tyne. The Bay is represented by 4s. 6d. to Bordeaux, and the Baltic by 4s. 9d. to Reval. The Mediterranean has Genoa at 7s. At South Wales, chartering has been slow. The Mediterranean is fairly active, at about late rates. The River Plate is quiet. The Bay and coasting ports are dull. In consequence of the Yorkshire miners’ strike, the Humber market is practically suspended. Very little is doing from the Scottish ports. Homewards, the tendency appears to be generally easier. America is slow, and the main business reported is on time charter. The Black Sea and district rule dull, with an indifferent enquiry for grain tonnage, due to slackness in the consuming markets. The Eastern market is slow and weak. Australia is quiet, but steady. The Mediterranean and ore trades are unaltered, as is also the Baltic. The River Plate is quiet, and rates favour charterers.
