W Wtaij fata AND Journal ot the Coal and Iron Trades. Joint Editors— J. V. ELSDEN, D.Sc. (Lond.), F.G.S. HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S. LONDON, FRIDAY. APRIL 3, 1914. The London coal trade for the past week has been largely influenced by the labour troubles in York- shire. Colliery prices have been withdrawn, but very little demand is noticeable for actual require- ments in London. The strong demand is for the shipping centres. The huge trade in export coal at Humber ports is practically at a standstill. The strike in the Yorkshire area has, of course, had a strong influence upon the provincial coal markets. On the Tyne and Wear there is very little prompt business, and prices have risen. In Lancashire the house coal trade has not been seriously affected, but steam coal prices have hardened. In the disturbed area itself prices have risen greatly, as has also been the case in the adjoining district, Derbyshire, where the demand has become very strong. Improved tonnage at Cardiff has now relieved the market, but prices are expected to increase owing to the York- shire -trouble. In Scotland no change can be noted, though an improvement is anticipated. The date of the general meeting in London of the Institution of Mining Engineers has been re-fixed for June 4 and 5. On the first day a banquet will be held at the Hotel Cecil, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the foundation of the institution.
