HUBERT GREENWELL, F.S.S. LONDON, FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 1914 The London coal trade during the past week has been exceedingly depressed. Merchants and factors- are holding off, and in the meantime the mild weather prevents any new business from coming forward. The depots are working slowly, and public orders are very few. Colliery prices have been more firmly maintained. The prompt market on the Tyne continues quiet, though a steady tone prevails on the Wear. In Lancashire business is only on a moderate level, but throughout Yorkshire and Derbyshire there is a brisk tone. The market at Cardiff has been depressed during the week, owing to the scarcity of tonnage. The market in Scotland is on the easy side. The Court of Appeal yesterday allowed the appeal of the Gfwendraeth Anthracite Colliery Company from a judgment of Mr. Justice Channell and Mr. Justice Coleridge, in which they construed a part of section 61, subsection 2, of the Coal Mines Act, 1911. Their lordships now held that the words “ actual net cost to the owner ” meant such a sum paid to the owner as would not leave him any profit, and included all proper allowances or out-of-pocket expenses, such as the cost of distribution. An ordinary meeting of the Manchester Geological and Mining Society will be held at Manchester on Tuesday, when Mr. W. Clifford’s paper dealing with the reversing of the main air current in coalmines will be open for discussion.
