The report of the Metropolitan Railway Company states
that the installation of special grates for the boilers in the
generating station at Neasden has enabled the company to
make use of less expensive descriptions of coal, and consider-
able economy has resulted therefrom. We understand that
the grates referred to are the Bennis, which have replaced
the grates of another make hitherto installed.

0BITDARY.

Mr. Jacob Berlyn, for many years connected with the
firm of Beynon and Co., colliery proprietors and shipowners,
Newport, has died, aged 84.

The death has taken place of Mr. Sydney A. Edwards,
iron steel and metal merchant of Edgbaston.

The death occurred at his residence at Doncaster, on the
30th ult., of Mr. T. Alf. Emmerson, a well-known colliery
official. Mr. Emmerson was assistant secretary to the
Denaby and Cadeby Collieries Limited, in whose service he
had been for over 20 years.

The death has occurred of Mr. R. H. Boyd, one of the
directors of Messrs. J. and T. Boyd Limited, Shettleston
Ironworks.

Mr Horace P. Woodward, late assistant director of the
Geological Survey of England and Wales, has died at his
residence, Coombe-road, Croydon, at the age of 65. He was
the second son of the late Dr. Woodward, of the British
Museum, and was a Fellow of the Royal Society as well as
of the Geological Society. Mr. Woodward joined the
Geological Survey in 1867, and retired in 1908. He was
Murchison medallist in 1897, and Wollaston medallist in
1909, and was the author of several important works on
geological subjects.

Sir Frank Ree, late general manager of the London and
North-Western Railway, died at his residence at Pinner,
Middlesex, last week. Deceased, who entered the service
of the North-Western in 1873, became district manager at
Liverpool in 1889, chief goods manager in 1893, and general
manager in 1909.

Mr. John Evans, works manager at Dowlais, died last week
at the early age of 37, after a long period of failing health.
He was the son of Mr. William Evans, general manager of
Guest-Keen’s great undertaking, and had previously been
engaged at Cyfarthfa, and at Barrow.

The death took place recently of Mr. F. P. Hacquoil, one
of the directors of Cardiff Exchange. As partner in the
firm of Hacquoil Brothers, coal exporters, he was for many
years a prominent man in the trade; but he retired about
10 years ago. Mr. Hacquoil was a native of Jersey. He
was 70 years of age.

Mr. John Z. Scholes, who was for some years in business
as a coal merchant at Fishpool, Bury, has died at Newark,
New Jersey.

Mr. Isaac Barlow, a well known Cheadle coal merchant,
has passed away at the age of 70 years.

The death is announced at Langside, Glasgow, of Mr. John
Connal, a gentleman long and honourably connected with
the coal industry in Lanarkshire, and particularly with the
Hamilton district. Deceased was identified early in life
with the firm founded by the late Sir John Watson of
Earnock—now known as John Watson Limited—and that
association was maintained until his retirement a year or so
ago. There were few men in the oal trade in Scotland who
were better able to trace its remarkable growth, or to tell
more interesting tales of its rise and progress.

The death has occurred of Mr. Joseph Langley, retired
coal merchant, of Springwood Avenue, West Bowling,
Bradford.

A prominent Morley tradesman in the person of Mr. Young
Crowther, coal and lime merchant, of Norwood House,
Westfield-road, Morley, has been removed by death.

Much regret is felt throughout North Wales at the
sudden death of Mr. Ellis Evans, who for many years was
underground manager at the Westminster and Gwersyllt
collieries, and who was held in high esteem by all who knew
him.

The death took place on Tuesday, in a nursing home in
Newcastle, of Mr. William Wilson Barnes, the general
secretary of the Northumberland and Durham Miners"
Permanent Relief Fund. Deceased was one of the general
trustees of the Durham Miners" Association. Mr. Barnes
was one of the newly-formed commitree for dealing with
distress through mining disasters in the country.

Lord Wimborne died at Canford Manor, Wimborne, early
on Sunday last, from heart failure. Lord Wimborne was a
partner in the great combination of ironmasters known as
Guest, Keen and Nettlefold.

In reply to a question by Mr. C. Bathurst last week in the
House of Commons, Mr. Runciman said that the lowest wage
for day work paid on behalf of the Crown to adult employees
in the Forest of Dean was that given to labourers, who were
paid at the rate of 18s. a week. In answer to a further
question, Mr. Runciman said that in November last he
offered to sell to the Rural District Council of East Dean
and united parishes, nine sites for workmen’s cottages at
prices ranging from £47 to £60 per acre. The offer was
subject to his approval of the building scheme, and the
Council state that they are proceeding to prepare the
necessary scheme. He had made a similar offer to the West
Dean Rural District Council, but the latter have resolved
to take no steps at present. He had also offered to sell to
the Cannop Colliery Company an area of about Ilf acres at
the rate of £60 per acre, as a site for workmen’s cottages.
Asked why the Government decline to sell cottage sites to
working miners, Mr. Runciman replied that it was contrary
to the practice in the Forest of Dean and quite unnecessary,
as the councils themselves were embarking upon housing
schemes.

ABSTRACTS OF PATENT SPECIFICATIONS
RECENTLY ACCEPTED.

1851 (1913.) A. New and Improved Process and Apparatus
for Obtaining a Useful By-product from Gas Manufacture, and
for the Recovery or Utilisation of Ammonia from Gas Manu-
facture. A. H. Lymn, of Queen Anne"s Chambers, West-
minster.—Relates in particular to the obtaining of a further
by-product in the manufacture of combustible gases. The
invention has for its object, besides providing a useful and
lucrative mode of recovering or utilising ammonia, to
obtain at slight cost a substance doubly valuable as a
fertiliser,“namely, ammonium nitrate or nitrite or both, these
substances being doubly valuable as fertilisers because they
contain nitrogen in their acid radical as well as in their
base. In a method of applying the invention to the recovery
of ammonia from gas producer plants, the gas leaving the
producer or superheater is, after having been freed from the
bulk of its dust by dry separation, washing or otherwise,
passed in a hot state—say at a temperature between 50 degs.
and 90 degs. Cent.—into an ammonia absorbing apparatus
in which it is brought into intimate contact with an
ammonium nitrate or nitrite solution or liquor containing
nitrogen oxides or oxyacids or both produced as a further
by-product. Such nitrogen oxides or oxyacids may be
introduced in any suitable manner into the liquor or
solution, or the liquor or solution may be utilised to wash
the nitrogen oxides or oxyacids out of the gases, leaving
the nitric acid plant. This latter method of introducing
the acid into the liquor or solution has the advantage that
it obviates to a large extent the bulky condensing towers
or other apparatus generally used to condense the acid in
the usual manner. The producer gases after having passed
through the ammonia absorbing apparatus, and after having
been freed from ammonia, may be caused to enter gas
washing and cooling apparatus by means of which they are
freed from tar and other impurities. The said producer
gases are then divided into two portions, one of which is
used to produce the nitric or nitrous acid for absorbing the
ammonia while the other portion is utilised for any other
desired purposes, for instance, for power production or for
furnace firing. (Eight claims.)

2081 (1913). Improvements in Percussive Rock-drilling
Tools and Machines. G. Hans Kirsch, Consolidated Gold-
fields-buildings, Simmonds-street, Johannesburg, Transvaal.
—Has particular reference to the type comprising a
reciprocating hollow piston and a relatively long tool or
toolholder that extends through said piston and is adapted
to be advanced from the piston as the drilling progresses.
According to the invention it is proposed to provide means
whereby the tool or drill may be locked to or disconnected
from the piston by partial rotation of the tool relatively to
the piston. The invention is more especially designed for
use in association with a tool of such a nature as to retain
its cutting efficiency independent of wear, such as that
described in Specification No. 18443 of 1912. With such a
tool it becomes unnecessary (apart from the limitations of
the feed mechanism) to change the tool during drilling,
and such change is also undesirable since the cutting
element of the tool, although not worn out, cannot in
practice be used again. A fluid-actuated percussive rock-
drill embodying the invention is shown in longitudinal
section in fig. 1. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-section through
A—B fig. 1, and figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a cross-
section similar to fig. 2 and a longitudinal section, showing
a means of securing the tool. A toolholder 1 of the requisite
ultimate length is adapted to be projected from its chuck 2
by successive steps, and to be positively secured in place at
each step. The chuck 2, piston rod 4 and piston 3 are
hollowed to accommodate the tool, and the piston 3 is also
formed, for the same purpose, with a hollow tail piece 5,
which passes out of the extended rear cover 6 of the

cylinder 7 through a stuffing box 8. The engagement of
the tool 1 with the reciprocating piston is effected at the
chuck 2. The securing device is such as to provide a rigid
abutment to prevent the tool from being forced, by the
blows, inwardly through the chuck. The tool 1 is provided
at intervals in its length with mutilated annular lugs or
threads 9, occurring singly or in groups, which are brought
by longitudinal movement of the tool into register with
complementary constructions 10 in the chuck and are
caused to engage the same by relative rotation of the parts.
Contacting circumferential surfaces of the tool and chuck,
e.g., the surfaces 11 and 12, may be formed to act as cams
or wedges and tighten upon one another as the too] is
turned to engage its lugs 9 with the lugs 10 of the chuck.
The direction of rotation of the tool relatively to the chuck,
for such engagement, is opposite to the direction in which
the piston and tool are made to rotate daring drilling, so
that the latter rotation tends to keep the tool tight in the
chuck. The tool is formed at 13 for the application of a
wrench to rotate it. In smother securing device shown in
figs. 3 to 4, the tool is secured by the well-known U-bolt
14 and pad 15 with or without a tightening wedge 16. The
body of the chuck 2 and the pad 15 are formed to receive
the above-described mutilated tool lugs 9, which are here
shown as single ones. In using the apparatus, the tool is
placed in its rearmost position and engaged with the chuck
as shown in fig. 1, the hole being then drilled until the
limit of the feed screw is reached. The machine is then
run back, the tool advanced a step, and so on until the hole
is of the required depth or the limit of the tool is reached,
when if necessary a similar but longer tool is used. In the
case of a tool having a detachable cutting element 30, the
latter may, if necessary, be changed whilst the tool is
retracted without changing the tool itself. (Six claims.)
