The attendance was well up to the average, and the improvement in demand which was apparent at the quarterly meeting was maintained. The trade of the dis- trict may be described as normal as regards bulk, with prices on the low side. During the week substantial sales of standard bars have been made at the reduced basis of £8 10s. per ton. Consumers have also taken advantage of the low prices of unmarked bars to cover their require- ments for the current quarter. They are able to secure supplies at £6 15s. to £6 17s. 6d. per ton. Small rounds, squares and flats ar© fairly active at the basis price of £615s. a ton at makers* works, f- basis; commoner qualities may be obtained for 2s. 6d. less. Nut and bolt iron is in increasing sale, but the competition of Belgian makers keeps prices low. The average is £6 10s. to .£6 12s. 6d. per ton, delivered in Wednesbury district. The increased activity in th© finished branches is having its effect on pig iron sales, which are steady and substantial, but producers have great difficulty in getting the higher rates which they claim they are entitled to. Northampton forge is in the neighbourhood of 50s. a ton and best Staffordshire 51s. to 52s. Superior brands of Northampton fetch 2s. more. The galvanised sheet trade is still progressive, and there is no reason to anticipate any slackening for the East Indies, South America, and other colonial markets, though a prolongation of the trouble in South Africa will have serious consequences. Current prices are <£11 5s. to £11 10s. at ports. No change is to be recorded in gas trip. Rumours have recently been current of an attempt to form a working agreement in the tube industry between English, German and Belgian firms, and if this should be brought about, gas strip prices will probably be affected as well. The price for small hoops of strong gauges is not more than £6 10s. a ton, and for lighter gauges £7 2s. 6d. to £7 5s. a ton at works. Business is quiet. Black sheets for galvanising are in better request, and command £8 2s. 6d. to £8 5s. per ton, with the usual extras for lighter gauges. Steelmakers are receiving new business with fair regularity, and are kept fully employed. Demi-products are quoted £4 15s. to £5 a ton for Bessemer largets and billets, and 2s. 6d. to 5s, extra for Siemens qualities. Lychssy, CML With regard to the house coal trade of this district orders have been, coming in more freely during the past few days, presumably owing to the colder weather, and the collieries have, as a result, been more regularly employed, full time being managed by the majority of the pits. Stocks, too, are comparatively light. The orders coming to hand from the inland merchants are fairly strong. Ship- ments are rather better this week. Most of the steam coal pits are doing good work, but the enquiry in force is only an average one. Prices at pithead. Current L’st week’s Last year’s House coals:— prices. prices. prices. Wade and Son report that owing to the colder weather there is an improved demand for house coal at the south coast ports, based on the late prices and freights. Stocks are being fairly well drawn upon. Freights remain unaltered. TO M-FLITE mDE Business has not been too brisk the last few days. There was a fair amount of enquiry, but few transactions of any moment! resulted. Makers are, on the whole, standing to their quotations, and most of them are booked up over the next month or so; some, indeed, say they are comfortably booked for the first quarter of the year. All the depots report an increasing trade, and the deliveries are very steady. The hitch at the King's Cross and St. Pancras depots with the carmen and loaders seriously interfered with the deliveries in that district, and brought an unusually large number of merchants on to the market on Monday. Seaborne house coals were firm, but as no Durham cargoes were on offer except under contract, the Yorkshire qualities found a better demand. Sharlston Wallsend wers quoted at 22s., and Sharlston Main at 20s. 6d. 32 vessels were entered for Monday's market as arriving in the River Thames, and 15 for Wednesday. The north-east gales along the coast and in the Channel have led to a great amount of havoc amongst the smaller craft on the River Thames, and considerably lessened the number of barges leaded with coal, capable of being moved to their respective wharves for unloading. An important meeting was held at the Guildhall on Friday last in connection with canal development, and recommendations were agreed upon asking local authorities, which would probably benefit by the proposed waterways, to contribute a proportionate amount of the cost. On Monday the ordinary routine of the Exchange was varied by a visit of a good number of the loaders and coal porters of the King's Cross and St. Pancras district, who had come to meet the committee of the Coal Merchants' Society with reference to an increase of 3d. per ton for unloading high-sided trucks at the various depots. This was agreed to, as the masters all felt that to lift a 2 cwt. sack of coal the extra height must entail an increased strain on the workman, but a further grievance was found amongst those working in the bays and shoots, and loading in | cwt. bags. Work had been entirely suspended all day Monday, and on Tuesday also, and those who had been granted the concession in regard to high-sided wagons now remained out in support of the other section. A further meeting was held on Tuesday, and the advance was conceded. Coal for hospital use was agreed should be loaded, but otherwise the whole of the depots in the neighbourhood were at a standstill. The carmen were in a state of enforced idleness, whilst the dispute lasted. A meeting is called for a week hence to deal v/ith one or two minor matters which may be looked upon as smaller questions. The continued cold weather has considerably hardened the colliery prices. On Wednesday last, the merchants decided to advance public prices 6d. per ton from Thursday, except best coal, which remains unaltered. Stove coal was, however, advanced Is. per ton. This brings the prices up to:—Best Wallsend 30s., best Silkstone 29s. 6d., Derby brights 28s. 6d., and stove coal 23s. 6d. A good many conflicting opinions were expressed, and some of the merchants complained that any advance will only lead to a further move in colliery prices. Factory coals are in steady demand, but the prices for steam coals are not so buoyant as the household qualities. The demand all round is firm. The railway companies are reported to have renewed the Yorkshire steam coal contracts at Ils. 6d. per ton, the same figure as last year.
