Durban (South Africa), June 17.—Coaling Plant.—The
Imperial Trade Correspondent at Johannesburg reports that
tenders are invited by the South African Railways
Administration for the supply and erection, in complete
working order, of additional coaling appliances at Durban
Harbour capable of dealing with 600 tons of coal per hour.
The plant is to include a side tipping car dumper, conveying
belts, loading conveyor and automatic weighers.*

Glasgow, May 26. — Boilers. — For (1) one high-class
Lancashire steam boiler for Moore-street slaughter-houses,
and (2) the removal of the two present boilers and the
refitting of one of these in new position, for the Corpora-

two shafts, each 13 ft. in diameter, to a depth of from 200 to

Sofia (Bulgaria), June 12.—Turntables.—H.M. Legation
at Sofia reports that the Directorate-General of Bulgarian
Railways and Ports intends to contract, by private arrange-
ment after competition, for the supply and erection of a
turntable of 18’05 metres (about 59 ft.) in diameter.

Talodi (Egypt), June 15.—Steelwork.—The London
Agent for the Egyptian War Office notifies that tenders are
invited by that Department for the supply of steelwork for
the Military Cantonment at Talodi.*

7635 (1912). Improved Fuel for Domestic and other Fires.
W. Garner, of No. Ill, Chesterfield-road, Sheffield.—Has
for its object the production of briquettes which shall
consist chiefly of coke ash or breeze combined with binding
material. In carrying out the invention 94 parts of coke
ash or breeze are taken and thoroughly dried, if it should
not already be in that condition, and six parts of pitch
(6 per cent.), which must also be dry, and should be crushed
to about the same size as the breeze. When the ingredients
are in a suitable dry condition, both or all three are ground
together to an extremely fine powder. The mass is then
made into briquettes of proper size by placing the desired
quantity in each of a series of moulds of suitable size and
shape, which are to be kept constantly hot, and pressing it
down with a ram or plunger adapted to work in the mould.
It is essential that the moulds shall be made to open in
such a manner that the briquette may be set free in every
lateral direction simultaneously. It is essential that the
moulds shall not be much more than 2 in. by 2 in. wide by
5 in. deep, so that when the powder is placed in the mould
it may become quickly and sufficiently warmed through by
the heat from the mould, which is to be kept constantly as
near as possible at 212 degs. Fahr. (Twu claims.)

8712 (1912). Improvements in the Conversion of Coal Tar,
Petroleum Residues, Creosote and Schist Oils and the like into
Pitch. La Societe Anonyme des Combustibles Industriels,
of 75, rue de Maubeuge, Paris, France.—Relates to a process
in which the whole chemical effect of the current of air on
the hydrocarbons referred to is made use of by the
combined action of heat, pressure, and the duration of
contact beween the air and the hydrocarbons to be treated,
the operation being carried out without distillation and the
hydrocarbons referred to, when other than tar, being mixed
with a suitable solvent, such as tar, that may counteract
distillation. The mixture to be treated is heated to a
temperature of 110 degs. Celsius, and is submitted to the
action of a current of air which is fed to the mixture under
pressure and in a divided condition. The pressure of the
air current must be equal to the final pressure of the gas
escaping from the apparatus after treatment and the column
of liquid through which the current is passed. The pressure
of the air is increased by treating several columns of liquid
simultaneously and thus increasing the static pressure of
the liquid. The action of the air is at its maximum in the
first column, as it parts in this column with practically all
its oxygen. The temperature of the tar oils treated in this
column is soon increased by the exothermic reaction thus
produced, whereas the chemical reaction would begin to
slacken if the temperature remained constant. A desul-
phurisation of the substances treated is also effected in the
first column. The air current is afterwards passed from
the first column to the following columns. The vapours
carried away by the hot air as it leaves the first column are
absorbed in the following columns, and the temperature of
the latter is raised to some extent by the hot current of
air. If necessary, hydrogen may also be withdrawn in this
latter series of columns by the prolonged action of this
current of air. When the reaction is sufficiently advanced
in the first column, such column is cut off, the pitch which
it contains is poured out, and a new charge of tar oils is
supplied to the column. After being recharged the column
is arranged to constitute the second or third unit in the
series of columns and its resistance to the current of air is
used to increase the pressure, and at the same time the
hydrocarbon vapours carried off from the first column are
dissolved therein. The addition of dissolving tar to the
hydrocarbons treated with a divided air current according
to this invention will allow of a temperature of 250 degs.
Celsius being attained in the case of coal tar, and 320 degs.
Celsius in the case of petroleum residues, without incurring
any appreciable distillation. (Six claims.)

8799 (1912). Improvements in or Relating to the Axle-boxes
of Trucks. W. B. Craggs, Geduld Proprietary Mines,
Springs, Transvaal, Union of South Africa.—The object is
to provide an axle-box with a detachable half bushing or
pad which can be readily renewed from time to time when
worn, thus lengthening the life of the axle-boxes. The
axle-box is constructed, in the usual manner, to completely
enclose the axle between the bearings provided at opposite
ends of the box. A suitably positioned aperture (or
apertures) is provided in the box to permit of the intro-
duction thereinto of oil or other suitable lubricant. The
ends of the box are preferably constructed as usual to
provide oil boxes or reservoirs in which lubricating pads
serve for applying the lubricant to the axle. The half-
bushings or pads are located in the ends of the box above
the oil-boxes or reservoirs. The said half-bushings or pads
are of hollow substantially hemi-cylindrical shape—they
may be made thicker at the top than at the sides—and
along the edges they are provided with external ribs, pro-
jections or flanges which may be either continuous or inter-
mittent. The box is constructed at the sides with corre-
spondingly shaped grooves or recesses to accommodate said
ribs or projections when the bushing or pad is in position,
and the sides of the box beneath said grooves or recesses are
preferably thickened somewhat or extended inwardly for a
distance equal to the length of the bushing or pad, more or
