1078 THE COLLIERY GUARDIAN. May 23, 1913. THE FREIGHT MARKET. Chartering on the north-east coast has been rather more active this week. Kates generally are fairly well main- tained. Coasting business is being done at from 3s. to 3s. 3d., Tyne to London, with Hamburg at 3s. 6d. The North of France is based on about 4s. 3d. to Havre, and the Bay on 5s. 3d. to St. Nazaire. Mediterranean rates run from 9s. 9d. to 10s. to Genoa, although, at the time of writing, there is a tendency for lower figures to be accepted. At South Wales, the fixtures reported are up to the average in number. Mediterranean rates are steadier, especially for the near ports. The Kiver Plate, Brazils and the Islands are strongly held, whilst the Bay and coasting ports are practically unaltered. At the Clyde, a fair business at steady rates is reported. The Mediterranean market at the Humber is active, and a fair amount of Baltic business is being done. Kates tend to advance. Homewards, the amount of transactions reported is fully up to the average. At the Black Sea, the tone for early loading is dull, but prospects are good and favour a rise in rates. The Azof and Danube are similarly affected. The Mediterranean and ore trades are unaltered. The Baltic is steady. Eastern markets are quiet, but firm. America is without note- worthy change. The River Plate is dull and tending easier.
