Lincoln, May 17.— For supply of 30,000 tons of screened
or unscreened gas coal and nuts, for the Gas Committee.

London, May 5.—Tenders are invited by the South
Suburban Gas Company for the supply of any quantity up
to 150,000 tons of screened or unscreened gas coals, deli-
vered at the company's works, Lower Sydenham and
Bromley, during the ensuing 12 months, or as may be
arranged. Particulars as to delivery, &c., can be obtained
of the company's engineer, Mr. S. Y. Shoubridge.

London, May 6.—The London County Council invites
tenders for the supply and delivery, from July 1, 1913, to
June 30, 1914, (a) of coal of various descriptions for the
pumping stations, sludge vessels, ferry boats, &c., in the
Chief Engineer's Department (Schedule No. 87), and (b)
of coal of various descriptions and coke for the several
offices, schools, fire stations, tramway depots, parks,

Birkenhead, May 19.—The Corporation of Birkenhead
are prepared to receive tenders for the supply of washed
slack or washed small coal, delivered at the Corporation's
electricity generating stations, situate in Bentinck-street,
Craven-street, and New Chester-road, respectively, for a
period of twelve months commencing July 1, 1913, and
terminating on June 30, 1914. Forms of tender, together
with any further information, may be obtained from
Mr. W. Wyld, M.I.M.E., M.I.E.E., borough electrical
engineer, Craven-street, Birkenhead. Tenders, stating the
price per ton delivered, sealed, and endorsed “ Tender for
Fuel for Electricity Works,” must be sent in so as to reach
me not later than 5 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 1913. All
deliveries must be made from time to time according to the
requirements of the borough electrical engineer. The
person or firm whose tender may be accepted will be
required to enter into a contract containing a clause as to
payment of the rate of wages and the observance of the
hours of labour recognised and agreed upon between the
trades-unions and employers in Birkenhead or in the locality
in which the work for carrying out the contract is executed,
as the case may be. The Corporation do not bind themselves
to accept the lowest or any tender, and reserve to themselves
the right of accepting the whole or any portion of a tender,
and will not make any allowance for or in respect of any

London, NE., May 8.—The Councilof the Metropolitan
Borough of Hackney are prepared to receive tenders from
colliery companies or their accredited agents for the supply
and delivery at the Hackney Public Baths, Lower Clapton-
road, N.E., or at a specified railway siding, of such quantities
of hard steam coal as they may require during a period of
12 months from May 10, 1913. The quantity used during
the period is estimated to be about 1,500 tons. The con-
tractor will be required to enter into a contract in the form
of that attached to the form of tender. In the case of all
workmen employed by the contractor, the contractor will be
required to pay wages not less and to observe hours of
labour not more than those recognised by the trade unions
and in practice obtained in the colliery district where the
coal is produced. Tenders (on forms which may be obtained
from the undersigned), enclosed in envelopes, sealed with
sealing wax, and endorsed “ Coal Supply to the Baths,”
must either be delivered by the person tendering or an
authorised representative to the Chairman, at a meeting of
the Tenders Committee of the Council, to be held at the
Town Hall, Mare-street, Hackney, on Thursday, May 8,
1913, at half-past six o'clock p.m., or sent by registered post,
addressed to the Chairman of the Tenders Committee, at the
Town Hall, so as to be delivered not later than the time
stated. Tenders sent otherwise will not be considered. The
Council do not bind themselves to accept the lowest or any

Plymouth, May 13.—The Plymouth Corporation is
prepared to receive tenders for the supply of 8,500 tons of
clean, good quality steam coal, suitable for use without
breaking in coking mechanical stokers. Specification and
form of tender may be obtained from the undersigned
before May 10 after a deposit of 20s. has been made for each
copy, which deposit will be returned after receipt of a
bona fide tender in accordance with, and on the form
provided. Sealed tenders duly endorsed must be delivered
to the undersigned not later than 9 a.m. on Tuesday,
May 13, 1913. The Corporation does not bind itself to

Melbourne, June 11.—Switchgear, <fc.—H.M. Trade
Commissioner for Australia reports that tenders are invited
by the Electric Supply Department of the city of Melbourne
for the supply of electrical switchgear and instruments,
including oil break switches, ammeters, voltmeters, power-
factor indicators, transformers, circuit - breakers, and
kilowatt-hour meters.*

Melbourne, July 8.—Switchboard, tyc.—H.M. Trade
Commissioner for Australia reports that tenders will be
received at the office of the Deputy Postmaster-General,
Melbourne, up to noon on July 8, for the supply of a
common - battery multiple switchboard and accessories
(schedule No. 805). A deposit of 5 per cent, on the first

and delivery, c.i.f. Tanjong Pagar Wharf, of about 1,600 tons
of cast iron sewer pipes and specials. The diameters of the
pipes required range from 18 in. to 33 in.

THE FREIGHT MARKET.

There has been considerably more outward business done
during the week, although rates show little improvement.
On the north-east coast, coasting business is based on from
3s. to 3s. l|d., Tyne to London, and from 3s. 3d. to 3s. 6d.to
Hamburg. Nothing has been doing Baywards. North
France is quoted at about 4s. 3d. to Havre. The Baltic has
been done at 5s. 6d. to Riga. The Mediterranean has Genoa
at from 9s. 3d. to 9s. 4|d. Chartering at South Wales has
been active. The tone of Mediterranean business is strong,
as is also that of the River Plate. Other directions show
little alteration. At the Clyde rather more is being done,
and rates are steady. The Humber market is fairly busy.
Homewards, an average amount of business is recorded. At
the Black Sea a very steady tone prevails, and, with grain
coming down free from the interior, the outlook is brighter.
Tonnage is somewhat limited in volume, and rates are
firmly maintained. The Danube and Azof share the better
tone of the Black Sea. The Mediterranean and ore trades
are firm. The Baltic is steady. America is strong, with a
scarcity of ready tonnage. The River Plate is weak, but
with more enquiry at lower figures.
