Electric Hang-fires and a New Cage Gate.—At a
meeting of the North Staffordshire Branch of the National
Association of Colliery Managers at Stoke-on-Trent, on
Saturday, Mr. R. H. Cole opened a discussion on “ Electric
Detonation Hang-fires.” He said he had obtained the
opinion of an expert in the manufacture of explosives on the
subject, and he stated :—“ The causes which may contribute
to a hang-fire with an electric detonator may arise as
follow: The sawdust, with which the detonator is filled,
may not all have been knocked out of the space left before
the electric fuse is inserted; and if this occurs, the electric
fuse, on being fired, sets fire to the sawdust, which then
slowly smoulders until it reaches the fulminate, the hang-
fire lasting just as long as it takes for the sawdust to
smoulder until it reaches the fulminate. Again, hang-fires
may be caused by the paper tube, into which the priming
composition is placed, being lighted and smouldering slowly
as in the case of the sawdust, this lighting of the paper tube
being caused by some manufacturers of electric detonators
inserting a paper wad into the tube referred to, so as to
keep the priming composition on the terminals of the
wire. If the resistance of the wad is greater than that
of the sides of the tube, the flame of the priming
composition bursts out at the sides of the tube and is
not projected directly on to the fulminate, and to
avoid this even remote possibility some manufacturers
of electric detonators discard the use of a wad altogether.”
After some discussion, in which several instances were
quoted, the president (Mr. Henshaw) remarked that in
every case it would appear to be due to smouldering, and
not to the current pausing and going on again, which
seemed to him to be quite impossible. Mr. C. Johnson read
a paper at the same meeting on a cage fence gate, made
and patented by Mr. S. Broad, engineer at the Mossfield
Colliery, Longton, Staffs., and which was in use there. The
gate in question is in two halves and is collapsible. Each
hplf of the gate was attached to an upright pillar, which at
its lower end was so hinged that it could not only turn about
a vertical centre line, but also be turned into a horizontal
position, so as to rest on the floor of the cage when not in
use. Each half of the gate consisted of vertical and
horizontal bars pivoted to each other at their point of
intersection, the ends of the horizontal bars nearest the
pillar being secured to the latter. When in working
position, the bars were held at right angles to each other by
the lowermost bar resting on a bracket projecting from the
pillar. The bars could be collapsed and forced into a very
small space. When the two halves were opened and brought
into alignment with each other, they were secured together
by a catch, which prevented any person entering or leaving
the cage. When not at work it was laid at rest on the
floor of the cage deck between the rail and side of the cage,
and was kept there by a holding-down clip. It was thus
out of the way when sending timber down the pit. The
height of the gate when working was 3 ft. 1| in., width of
each half 1 ft. 4| in., height of pillar 4 ft. 5| in. When
closed, the total length was 4 ft. 11| in., and the width only
3| in. The weight of the gates for one end of a deck was
371b.

THE FREIGHT MARKET.

On the north-east coast, outward chartering is impeded
by some slight dislocation of arrivals, due to stormy
weather, but even more by the congested condition of
loading turns, and the comparatively few transactions that
are recorded have been done at rates which show some
weakness on the week. The Mediterranean appears to
maintain its strength, but rates in most other directions are
reduced. At South Wales, there has been a fair amount of
activity. Rates in all directions, excepting for the Plate,
however, are depressed, owing to the excess of tonnage
which is offering. At the Clyde, a fair business at about
late figures is reported. The Humber is quiet, and rates
are declining for the Baltic. The Mediterranean is steady.
Homewards, a full average amount of business has been
done. New York advices report a scarcity of tonnage for
April loading, and rates in all trades are steadily moving in
owners* favour. Grain, timber, cotton and coal tonnage is
all in keen request. Time-charter orders are numerous. At
the Black Sea, despite the opening of navigation, the
market is dull, and rates for early loading are easy. For
forward positions, rates tend to advance. Eastern markets
are quiet, but firmer. The Mediterranean and ore trades
ars well maintained. The Baltic is firm. The River Plate
is busy, and rates tend to increase.

Marriage of Mr. B. fi. Pickering. — An interesting
wedding took place in the Doncaster Parish Church on
Wednesday afternoon. The bridegroom was Mr. Basil Henry
Pickering, manager of the Wath Main Colliery, and only
son of the late Mr. William Henry Pickering, F.G.S. (his
Majesty's chief inspector of mines for the Yorkshire and
North Midland district), and of Mrs. Pickering, of Lawn
House, Doncaster. The bride was Mies Alice Elizabeth,
younger daughter of Mr H. A. Brundel), C.E , J.P., and
Mrs. Brundell, of St. James* Cottage, Doncaster. The
ceremony (which was postponed on account of the lamented
death of the late Mr. W. H. Pickering in the Cadeby
Colliery explosion last July) was of a quiet character, owing
to a recent bereavement in the bride's family, but it never-
theless was largely attended, both families being exceedingly
well known in Doncaster and district.—There was an
interesting gathering at the Wath Main Colliery last
Saturday, when a presentation was made to Mr. Pickering.
Councillor W. Riley, who has served under all the managers
since the colliery started, handed Mr. Pickering a silver tea
and coffee service with massive tray, embellished with the
