January 10, 1913 THE COLLIERY GUARDIAN. 63 ____________________________ Profitable Steam Raising in Collieries. “ Bennis ” Machine Stokers fed by means of a “Bennis” U-link Chain Conveyor, doing good work in a world-famed colliery. Mechanical stoking shows great advantage over hand-stoking. By the adoption of machines the firing is more even and regular, and the combustion therefore more efficient, whilst the losses arising from the admission of large quantities of cold excess air through the fire doors and through holes in the bed of fuel are avoided. The cost of labour is also greatly reduced if the machine stokers are used in conjunction with coal elevating and conveying plant. But while these advantages are claimed for mechanical stoking, it is essential that the right kind of machine-stoker should be installed. There are machines on the market to-day that should be on the scrap-heap, as they are as costly as the proverbial “ white elephant.” There are others in the experimental stage, for which steam-users are paying the cost of experiments instead of reaping economic advantages. There are yet other machine stokers that are marvels of ingenuity in design, but are of no more practical value than toys! None of these will help those responsible for the conduct of collieries to get good paying results. The stoking machine that an up-to-date colliery requires is the “ Bennis ” Sprinkler Stoker, fed by means of “ Bennis ” coal-handling plant. This mechanical stoker is installed under guarantees of economy and efficiency, which render it a paying investment. It rapidly pays for itself by increasing boiler duty, and burning effectually low-grade, low-price fuels. It burns them so well that it abolishes smoke. Where “ Bennis ” machines are fed by “ Bennis ’’ elevators or conveyors, labour costs are inevitably reduced to a minimum. In times of pressure, when the demand for steam is suddenly increased, the ease with which the “ Bennis ” Sprinkler Stoker responds, ensures it a leading position where flexibility is an acknowledged desideratum. “ Bennis ” plant is particularly applicable to steam collieries, and “ Bennis ” self- cleaning furnaces are so arranged as to afford the advantages of hand-firing without its disadvantages. For full particulars of the “ Bennis ” Hand-fired Furnaces for use in steam collieries, write for “ Pit Rubbish as Fuel ” pamphlets to Ed. Bennis & Co. PALMETTO’ RCG.TRAOC MARK PACKING may be used ovtr again several times. You’have merely to strip off the outer covering that has become worn and use it over again as a smaller size. It is only because “Palmetto” does not harden in service that you are able to do this. Economy is only one feature of “Palmetto” packing. Its great efficiency is even more important.
